Sora 2
OpenAI's social-first video model: up to 25-second clips with synchronized dialogue and music, cameo characters, strong physics — behind a ChatGPT plan and an invite-style app.
What Sora 2 is
Sora 2 is OpenAI's second video model and the engine behind the Sora social app. It is genuinely good at three things: physics (a basketball rebounds the way a basketball rebounds), synchronized sound (dialogue, effects and music generated with the picture), and cameos — you record yourself once and drop that likeness into scenes. Clips run 15 to 25 seconds at 1080p.
It is also the most restricted model on this list. It refuses realistic likenesses of real people you have not verified, it is aggressive about anything brand- or IP-adjacent, and access runs through ChatGPT's paid tiers with monthly caps that reset whether you used them or not. Great toy, awkward tool.
The Lab does not resell Sora 2. But every prompt style below has a direct equivalent on Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1 or Seedance 2.5 in the video studio — with references, dialogue and 4K — and you pay per clip instead of per month.
How Sora 2 reads a prompt (and how to translate it)
Sora likes natural, cinematic paragraphs: visual style, camera movement, lighting and mood, then the audio. OpenAI's own sample reads like a treatment: "A cinematic 20-second video of a coffee shop barista crafting latte art in warm golden afternoon light…ambient coffee shop sounds and soft indie music." The same paragraph works almost unchanged on Kling and Veo. The only translation you need: keep the length inside each model's limit (Kling 15 s, Veo 8 s, Seedance 30 s).
A 15-second clip: a coffee-shop barista crafts latte art in warm golden afternoon light. Smooth camera push-in from the pitcher to the cup as the rosette forms. Sound: ambient café, milk pour, soft indie guitar low in the mix.
Sora's 25-second single clip is its main edge. Seedance 2.5 matches it at 30 seconds in one take; Kling and Veo need a cut.
What Sora 2 does well
- Physics and continuity — objects keep their weight; a missed shot bounces off the rim instead of teleporting in.
- Multi-speaker sound — two or three people talking with matching lips and room tone.
- Cameos — your verified likeness inserted into any scene, with your voice.
- Comedy timing — it lands beats in skit-style content better than most.
Where it falls short
- Access — a ChatGPT plan plus the Sora app; generation caps reset monthly.
- Refusals — real people, many brands, anything it reads as risky. Expect "this violates our policies" on harmless product shots.
- No references beyond cameos — you cannot upload three photos of a product and lock it the way Seedance, Kling Omni or Hailuo do.
- Watermark — visible on downloads from the free tier.
- 1080p ceiling — no 2K or 4K.
The same shots, in the Lab, per clip
Below are twelve prompts written the way Sora likes them, each pointed at the Lab model that does that job best. Click, and the studio opens with the model selected and the prompt in place.
Physics and gags → Veo 3.1
A golden retriever tries to carry a stick three times wider than a doorway, fails, tilts its head, turns sideways and succeeds. Static wide shot, bright hallway. SFX: claws on wood, a triumphant huff.
A basketball rolls along the rim in slow motion, teeters, and drops through the net. Low angle, gym light. SFX: the rim rattle, the swish.
A glass of water on a train table trembles as the train accelerates, then settles. Extreme close-up. Ambient noise: rails, a distant announcement.
Dialogue skits → Kling 3.0
Two roommates in a small kitchen. Medium two-shot. One opens the fridge and says: "Who labeled the milk?" The other, deadpan: "The milk did." Warm evening light. Sound: fridge hum, a laugh.
A job interview across a desk. Interviewer: "Biggest weakness?" Candidate, confident: "Honesty." Interviewer: "I don't think that's a weakness." Candidate: "I don't care what you think." Office light, shot-reverse-shot.
A grandmother teaches a teenager to knead dough, flour everywhere, she says: "Slower. Bread can tell." Warm kitchen light, slow push-in. Sound: dough, a kettle.
Long cinematic takes → Seedance 2.5
A 25-second single take: a street food stall at night, the cook flips noodles in a wok, flames rise, a customer laughs, the camera slowly circles to the queue. Neon and fire light. Sound: sizzle, wok clang, chatter.
A 20-second continuous shot following a paper lantern rising from a festival crowd into a sky full of them. Warm firelight below, deep blue above. Sound: crowd, a soft breeze.
A 30-second dawn: a fishing boat leaves a harbor, gulls follow, sunlight reaches the water, the town wakes behind. One slow crane rise. Sound: engine, gulls, bells.
Cheap social drafts → Wan 3.0
Vertical 9:16, a cat knocks a pen off a desk, looks at the camera, knocks off another. Static. Sound: two clicks, a meow.
Vertical 9:16, a skateboarder lands a kickflip on the third try, friends cheer. Handheld. Sound: board, cheers.
A time-lapse of a sandcastle being built and the tide reaching it. Static wide, beach light. Sound: waves, kids.
Translating a Sora prompt, line by line
A Sora prompt is a paragraph; most Lab models prefer the same content in a slightly different order. The translation is mechanical. Put the camera first (Kling and Veo read it as the shot), keep the subject and action as written, move lighting and mood into one sentence, and end with the audio as its own line — ambience first, dialogue in quotes. Then cut the length to the target model: Veo wants one beat in 8 seconds, Kling three shots in 15, Seedance a full 30-second take.
Two things Sora prompts often include that you should drop: the words 'cinematic' and 'high quality' (they do nothing), and the request for a specific real person (the Lab's reference tools want your own photos instead). One thing to add: the sound line, always — Sora fills it in automatically, the Lab models do exactly what you write.
The result is usually better than the original, because the Lab models take references. A Sora prompt says 'a woman in a red coat'; the Lab version attaches the photo of the actual woman in the actual coat.
Cameos without Sora
Sora's cameo is a verified likeness plus voice. The Lab's equivalent is references: three photos of you (front, three-quarter, laughing) loaded into Kling 3.0 Omni, Seedance 2.5 or Hailuo H3, and a 10-second voice clip as an audio reference. It is more setup than Sora's one-time scan, and it works on any model you choose, at 4K, with no app.
Your face in every scene (Kling 3.0 Omni)
Use reference images 1–3 as the same person. She stands at a market stall, picks up a mango, looks at the camera and says: "This one." Bright noon, medium shot. Sound: market chatter.
